Flipping the Calendar

Jennifer Iverson

I love the newness of flipping the calendar to January. It is fresh start. A clean slate. And yet, just changing the year doesn’t really change anything. January 1 invites us to start something new, but January 1 has the same troubles as December 31. My daily routine doesn’t drastically change. My bank account doesn’t magically grow. My kids don’t miraculously become obedient. People don’t suddenly become kind. Every day has its own challenges no matter what the last number is on the date.

Thankfully, we don’t need to flip the calendar to get a fresh start. God says every day is new. Yesterday may have been a dumpster fire, but today is a new day. Fresh, clean, without mistakes to start over.

Then I remember something that fills me with hope. The Lord’s kindness never fails!
If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed.
The Lord can always be trusted to show mercy each morning.
Deep in my heart I say, “The Lord is all I need; I can depend on him!”

Lamentations 3: 21-24

Every day is a God’s invitation to trust him. We can have hope every morning. Every day is an opportunity to spread God’s kindness and love. Every day we are filled with hope. Every day we can rely on God to provide and protect. Every day we can know God is at work. Every day I want to say, “The Lord is all I need; I can depend on him!”
