The moment I was born I was placed immediately into an orphanage. My birth mother couldn’t take care of me. So, I started my life in and out of foster care. An unwanted, uncared-for orphan. My personal experience is why I’m so committed to the work Childcare Worldwide is doing for children living in poverty without their spiritual and basic needs being met.
While I was in foster care, a 17-year-old girl was writing her husband-to-be. They had just gotten engaged when he got drafted into the US Army and left to serve in Vietnam. She prayed for him and their future together, and each day she became more convicted that her place in life was to be a mom.
When her fiance returned, they walked into the room where I was being cared for. My mom said as soon as she saw me she thought, “I don’t know anything about this child. I don’t even know his name. But I know this little boy needs a mommy.”
From that day forward I had everything I needed. A roof over my head, clothes on my back, and shoes on my feet. I got to play baseball and go to school. And I was taken to church! That was the first time I ever heard anything about God or Jesus – when my mom took me to church. There’s not a single day that goes by I don’t thank God for her and what she decided to do for me.
My life could have turned out so differently – but instead, I was introduced to Jesus and given the opportunity to thrive. And that’s an opportunity I would love to see extended to as many children as possible!
For the past decade, I have traveled internationally meeting other children like myself. Kids who were born into situations that weren’t ideal. Children living with extended families and children living in extreme poverty. Through sharing my story I’ve been able to see over 70,000 children rescued from poverty and challenging circumstances over the years.
Matthew 25:45 says “‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.” A life well lived in God’s eyes is when we look after others.
